On 15th Aug 1947 India crated 9 Postal Index Zone. In which eight are regional zone and ninth is a functional zone. As India is like a subcontinent there can be a possibility of towns or city with a same name.So it will increase confusions for the postal service. To overcome this problem pin code system is very effective which results into minimization of human errors along with time reduce etc.

Pin Code contains 6 digits

First digit shows Zone in which that post office include
Second digit is Sub region 
Third digit indicates sorting district of that particular zone
Last three digits indicates the post office number


Following are the 9 pin zones which includes Indian States and Indian Territories.
  1. Zone 1- Delhi, Haryana, Punjab,, Chandigarh, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir
  2. Zone 2- Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand
